Andrew Malmsea was a man as passionate about photography as he was about providing the best service and comfort on an ocean crossing. As Chief Steward aboard the most glamorous ocean liner, Malmsea came to know many of the worlds most popular celebrities. With camera in hand, he would oversee to the comforts of the first class passengers and quite often photograph some magic moments. Many of the photographs in this collection are autographed suggesting that Malmsea had his own dark room on board and could present prints to his subjects for signing by voyage end.

Malmsea as a child dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. After years of oceangoing service he achieved that dream. Hailing from Landskrona, Sweden, Malmsea left his home at 15 to begin his seagoing career. Much of Malmsea’s career was served acting as steward. He served on the S.S. United States as Assistant Chief Steward, eventually becoming Chief Steward. Retiring in 1970 after over 25 years of service with United States Lines, Malmsea returned to his home town in Sweden. He continued to live there pursuing his love of photography until his death in the early 1980’s. Much thanks goes to his family for the preservation of his photos and their generosity in allowing the S.S. United States Foundation to share them with you.
